Tips to Protect Your Home’s Exterior

October 16, 2016 by Landon McGuire Leave a Comment

house-with-landscaping“There’s no place like home.”  That’s not just a famous quote from a strange movie… it really is the truth!  Your home is where you cook meals, sleep, and spend time with family, but occasionally, there are a few things that need to be done to maintain your property.  Here are a few simple tips that you should do to protect your home’s exterior.

Trim foliage

Any plants, bushes, or trees that are growing against your home need to be trimmed away.  Tree branches that hang low over your house and touch your roof could wear down your shingles and cause roof leaks over time.  Bushes and plants that grow against the siding of your home could trap moisture and cause rotting and allow insects and animals to infiltrate your home.

Keep the gutters cleaned out

Gutters are great for funneling rain off and away from your house.  However, clogged up gutters can cause quite a bit of damage to your home’s exterior.  If water gets backed up in your gutters, it could eventually lead to wood rot to your fascia, soffit, or siding of your home.  This could easily be prevented by checking your gutters at least twice a year to remove leaves, sticks, or even tennis balls that your kids might have hit in your gutter.  Installing leaf guards over your gutters can also prevent blockages.

Caulk around windows

In order to prevent water from seeping into your house, it is a good idea to caulk around your windows.  Caulking around doors and windows will also help your house be more energy efficient.
